The Manila Hotel

Posted by on October 4, 2011

This institution needs no further introduction, but for those who’ve been living under a rock in the last century, the Manila Hotel is now on its 100th year of operation and is the oldest premier hotel in the land. Built from 1909 and inaugurated in 1912, the hotel has played host to a number of very important people, among them U.S. President John F. Kennedy, American author Ernest Hemingway, actor John Wayne, and The Beatles (okay, even the late Michael Jackson). Steeped in rich history and tradition, the hotel is gearing up for its grand centenary next year. In celebration of its 99th anniversary, the Manila Hotel has special dining offers this month: Cafe Ilang-Ilang will add a 10th buffet station featuring certified Manila Hotel favorites such as the native bibingka and pancit palabok.  Aside from that, the cafe also presents its Heavenly Chocolate Buffet, which is available from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. daily for P490++ per person. The Champagne Room, on the other hand, will be offering its Anniversary Degustation Menu at P2,000++ per head.  The menu includes President Manuel L. Quezon’s favorite dish (Squab Chicken Manhoco) as well as General Douglas MacArthur’s favorite (El Mero Envolvio en Hojas de Platano).

I had the most amazing lunch experience at the Champagne Room earlier this year and I thought it was the sort of place even Marie Antoinette would have approved of. It’s opulent, enchanting and majestic — a feast for the eyes! And the food was absolutely marvelous! Living like royalty for a day is a cinch when you’re at the Manila Hotel.
