So yes, I’m addicted to facebook. Who isn’t? It’s my link to the world beyond our home and my connection to some of my dearest, oldest friends. I probably devote 50% of my waking hours online (though I don’t have a Twitter account, thank God), not because I enjoy the senseless musings or ridiculous bickerings of people (e.g., one of the members of a group to which I belong said to another, “You insults me!” [sic] and the other replied, “If I insults you [sic], I’m sorry.”) Very entertaining, yes? It’s really a crazy world out there. But do you want to know why I love facebook so much? It’s simply because I watch for contests — be it a photo contest, a raffle draw, or just any kind of online contest. The most popular social networking site in cyberspace is a treasure trove of contests for contest freaks like myself. Since I’m online most of the time anyway, I thought I’d get something tangible out of it — from a scoop of gourmet ice cream (for correctly guessing the newest flavor) to free photo sessions at a membership photo studio. I call this activity “milking it.”
I’m not lucky at raffle draws, to be honest. I don’t think I’ve ever won at any of them, though I seldom enter anyway. But if the contest requires a bit of writing or a photo, then I’m a force to reckon with (insert evil laugh here). Take a look at some of my prizes…
Everyone knows I love food. On my husband’s birthday in November last year, we treated the whole family to pizza and pasta at Italianni’s in Bonifacio High Street. Naturally I took photos of our family moments. It so happened that Italianni’s was hosting a photo contest via facebook that time so my daughter Bea and I entered. Guess what? I won the grand prize and my daughter Bea received a special prize. I used my prize to treat my husband and my parents-in-law to a special lunch on our wedding anniversary last December. My prize was a Towering Flavors of Lunch good for four persons, which included the Buon Gusto Tower (worth P995) and the Traditionale Tower (worth P895), while Bea’s prize was a gigantic Pizza Enorme (priced at P700). It was a delightful anniversary celebration, especially since we were given free ice cream at the end of the already hearty meal. I’ve also won a slab of Angus steak from Racks [bottom right photo, first collage] from its facebook promo. Yum.
As a housewife, I don’t always have the means to indulge in my favorite treats because they cost quite a lot. Fortunately, I find ways to get them for free from facebook. There’s a Filipino colloquial term for it : rumaraket. One thousand pesos worth of artisan chocolate from Machiavelli Chocolatier [top left photo, 2nd collage] courtesy of Yummy Magazine‘s facebook page, for simply answering which is my favorite chocolate variant from Machiavelli. Three thousand pesos worth of Robinsons Department Store gift certificates from its Mother’s Day photo contest. And then there was a time I posted a photo of my daughter on Chocolate Fire‘s facebook wall just out of habit and for fun (since I have tons of photos on my laptop). There wasn’t even a contest then, but somehow Chocolate Fire got an idea of running a “photo of the month” contest and declared my Bea’s photo as the first winner. What a pleasant surprise! And we definitely won’t say no to Chocolate Fire‘s heavenly creations [bottom right photo, 2nd collage].
Another surprise came after I posted Bea’s photo on Bizu Patisserie‘s facebook page. Bea and I absolutely adore Bizu and we have been avid fans since Bea was still a baby. So I was thrilled when I received a private message from Bizu‘s marketing officer asking if they can have the rights to my Bea’s photo in exchange for P2500 worth of Bizu gift certificates and a Bizu Fanatique card (discount card). Why, YES! Said photo was used in their promotional TV clip on the Lifestyle Network.
As it is, I’m already very happy and grateful for all of the blessings that come my way via facebook, but it seems that my prizes have somehow “leveled up” most recently. I won second place in a photo contest sponsored by Mandarin Oriental Manila, the prize for which is an overnight weekend stay at a junior suite of the hotel. I love it! And then there’s this recently concluded photo contest hosted by the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. where I bagged the grand prize of a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS (mall price: P23,000). It was totally unexpected but I am most grateful for it. It’s really not about the cost of the prize that exhilarates me — it’s just the idea that I can get something just by sending in a photo or writing a short line. It’s a wonderful feeling and I encourage all my friends to try it sometime. Wasting time at the computer can also be rewarding, you know. Yesterday I claimed my free tickets to Peter Pan the musical courtesy of InterContinental Manila‘s facebook page. Winning them was as easy as 1-2-3. The other night, I told my husband that I want to see The Sound of Music at Resorts World Manila. He said, “Buy the tickets, I’ll pay for them.” I so appreciate his generosity, but in my head I said, “Why buy when I can win tickets?” *keeping fingers crossed*
To God be all the glory!!!
