This year’s Oktoberfest may have officially ended last October 3 — which coincided with the German National Day — but for a Germanophile like myself, I cannot let this month pass without offering a toast to the “land of beer and sausages.” From October 7 to 9, the Bonifacio High Street [BHS] at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig is transformed into a tiny German village, where everyone can have a slice of German culture, food, technology and tradition. This event is brought to us by the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. and the German Embassy in Manila. There are many participating companies with booths all over BHS exhibiting German products and sponsoring games and prizes. I was able to buy authentic Nürnberger Würste with a side of the quintessential Sauerkraut from the German Club booth. The smell of those grilled sausages took me back to Germany even for just a few minutes. Sehr lecker!
Naturally, I was there on the first day of the event not just because I wanted to eat some Würste (sausages) but also because my entry in the Mabuhay Germany Photo Competition is on display inside the Hobbes & Landes shop. This year’s theme is “Winning Moments” and the Top Ten entries in the competition are vying for the three major awards. Each of the 3 winners will receive a Canon digital camera plus a one-day photography workshop. My photo is that of my parents-in-law displaying their affection for one another even after 59 years of marriage — truly a winning moment for our family. But I swear, I’m not expecting to win — the other 9 entries are all good. All I really wanted was to be included in the Top Ten so that my photo entry will be on display, and my supportive friends and family on facebook have already made that possible. So big thanks to them! The awards ceremony will be tomorrow night, October 9. I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyway.
Prost!!!
