They’re baaaaaack! Blasting from my childhood days in the ’80s are these adorable blue creatures collectively known as the Smurfs. They were among my favorites back when I was a kid. In fact, I even had a poster hung on my bedroom wall that said, Have you hugged a Smurf today? I’m so glad that today’s generation will get to know the Smurfs characters via the new Smurfs movie set to hit our local cinemas on August 10. My Bea and I can’t wait to watch it!
Did you know that they were originally from a Belgian comic strip series called Les Schtroumpfs? (I learned this from TLC — the Travel and Living Channel.) Later on, it was translated into the Dutch term, Smurfs, which caught on because it’s a lot easier to say and recall — don’t you agree?
More Smurfs trivia:
* Smurfs are the size of three apples piled one on top of the other.
* Papa Smurf is about 542 years old, give or take a few years. Who knows for sure?
* Smurfette, the only girl in Smurf Village, was actually created by Gargamel — an evil wizard and the Smurfs’ number one enemy.
If you love them as much as I do, go grab a McDonald’s Happy Meal today. It comes with a Smurfs toy to help us relive our childhood days, err… I mean, so we can share the joy with our kids.
