Just Cakes

As someone who knows zilch about baking, I’m in constant awe of the artistry and ingenuity involved in crafting the perfect cake. I see cakes as yummy works of art. This is why I’m crazy for cakes. This Love Month, I went to visit 3 hotel outlets in search of heavenly cakes and I found happiness times three.

Earl Grey Chocolate Mousse from Cafe Macaron (Fairmont Makati)

Earl Grey Chocolate Mousse

The newest luxury hotel in Makati has a tiny cafe that specializes in French macarons, but the personal cakes beckoned me from their shelf. I ended up choosing the Earl Grey Chocolate Mousse (P250++) . An ultra-rich, velvety chocolate indulgence with just the right hint of Earl Grey tea, garnished with dark and white chocolate, a fresh strawberry and edible gold — I believe this creation is meant to be savored slowly.ย  At the heart of this masterpiece is a surprise solid piece of praline that only heightens its decadence.ย  It’s one great cake for those who love tea and chocolate (wait, that’s me!).

Carrot Cake from Dusit Gourmet (Dusit Thani Manila)

Carrot Cake

For more affordable hotel cakes, Dusit Gourmet is my go-to place. The baked goodies are pretty and enticing but not exorbitantly priced. Take this Carrot Cake (P150 net) for instance. This wholesome cake with generous carrot shreds would otherwise look blah if not for its crown of cream cheese, fresh fruit and chocolate heart. It’s simple but satisfying. And it looks pretty appealing, too.

ย Honey Supreme Cake from Java+ (Marriott Hotel Manila)

Honey Supreme Cake

Last Valentine’s Day, I treated myself to this beautiful cake from Marriott Hotel in Resorts World Manila. Of the 3 cakes featured in this post, this Honey Supreme Cake (P250 net)ย  is my favorite just because of its uniqueness. Aside from being pleasing to the eyes, it’s also very pleasing to my palate. A light chocolate cream mousse on almond biscuit, it tastes like custard that’s not overly rich. Surrounded by thin chocolate tiles and topped with refreshing honey jelly and a macaron (which was way too sweet for my taste) plus more chocolate, it’s a sweet and dainty artwork that tastes as wonderfully as it looks.
