My parents just recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary or Ruby Anniversary (yes, I was a honeymoon baby!) and we thought of treating them to a nice hotel stay and a strictly-family anniversary lunch in Makati. They came all the way from Olongapo City, where I grew up and where they still reside, and I think our treat came as a welcome getaway for them. And for us, it was a great summer staycation at the same time.
I chose the month-old Holiday Inn & Suites Makati [HISM] for our weekend celebration just because it’s conveniently located right above the new Glorietta and we are such mall rats! The brand-new hotel opened to the public last April 1 and features 348 guest rooms. We booked my parents in a Deluxe Room at a special promo rate of P6,099.60 (net), while we stayed in a Corner Suite for P9,657.70 (net) per night. The rooms are pretty standard and modern, each with a 40″ LED TV mounted on the wall. My younger sister and her family from Subic also got a room so we all stayed in the hotel for the weekend.
Of course, our suite came with additional perks such as free Wi-Fi (very important since we all brought our own gadgets), personalized check-in and check-out service with a late check-out option, daily exclusive breakfast at the Executive Lounge, complimentary sodas, premium coffee and specialty teas all day, afternoon tea from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and evening cocktails (hors d’oeuvres, complimentary beer, wine and standard alcoholic beverages) from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. We love the suite life!
On our first day, we were extremely delighted to find our favorite native delicacies as afternoon tea fare: cassava cake, sapin-sapin, nilupak, maja blanca and pichi-pichi were all laid out on the small buffet table. My husband Caloy was particularly very appreciative that HISM thought of serving these Filipino favorites as a way to promote them to foreign guests. Nice touch. The hors d’oeuvres later that night were not only filling but so delicious as well: fresh lumpiang ubod, pork barbecue liempo, fish fingers, etc. Caloy says that, among all the hotels we’ve so far stayed in, HISM has the best food in the Lounge, but I couldn’t make up my mind just yet.
The next day, Caloy and I joined my parents for breakfast at Flavors on the 4th floor even though we could have dined at the more exclusive Executive Lounge on the 19th floor. We wanted to make sure my parents were enjoying their meal. The breakfast buffet offerings were not like in other hotels where there’s way too much food you actually feel overwhelmed. At Flavors, the breakfast choices were just right. And there were no other guests around when we ate so the place was so quiet.
Since it is well into the summer, we loved hanging out at the pool area on the roof deck of HISM. For 3 days, we dipped in the refreshing water of the swimming pool and had such a fun time. Because it was on the topmost floor, the pool area seemed more exclusive, away from the view of other hotel guests. At night, the whole area transforms into a cozy roof deck bar.
I’m only too happy and grateful that we were able to celebrate my parents’ milestone as a complete family. We had a truly enjoyable stay at HISM and I can really say I made the right choice. I would like to give a special shout-out to the very warm and friendly hotel staff, especially to Daisery (who arranged for a cake to be sent to my parent’s room — my mom said it was yummy!), Jobeth and Donna, who are still in touch with my daughter Bea via facebook. Would we consider staying in Holiday Inn & Suites Makati again? Absolutely!
