Banoffee Pie by banapple

Posted by on July 10, 2011

The thing is, I’m not really a fan of bananas. Unless the bananas are fried and heavily coated in brown sugar, there’s no way I’m eating them. But then a few years ago, just out of curiosity, I tried a slice of Banoffee Pie from Red Ribbon Bakeshop and was instantly smitten.  Unfortunately, it didn’t become a mainstay in the cake store, which led me to hunt for an alternative. I’ve tried the ones from Starbucks (kind of blah) and Mocha Blends (too sweet) until I discovered that banapple churns out the best–and I mean, hands-down, the best–Banoffee Pie this side of the planet.

The name of this dessert, which is said to have been “invented” in England in 1972, is obviously a combination of the words banana and toffee. The toffee in this pie is a soft and creamy “milk candy” (literally, dulce de leche) obtained from boiling a can of condensed milk until it reaches a caramel-like state. It’s probably the reason I’m enamored with this pie, but let us not forget the very delicious pie crust. I swear I could eat the crust alone and wouldn’t dare complain. But then again all the other components of banapple’s Banoffee Pie–the large, fresh chunks of bananas, whipped cream, generous chocolate shavings and even the drizzling of chocolate syrup–make it a total knockout. Mmmmm…

Joy! Congrats on your new blog! 🙂

Seriously, I have been trying to dine at Banapple in Ayala Triangle Garden, but every time we go there it’s so packed and we end up going to the other restaurants. I have to try at least one thing in their menu soon!
